Phorusrachids, also known as "Terror Birds" were the dominant land predators in South America during the Cenozoic. These large birds (some stood up to 3 metres tall) were flightless, but could run at speeds of up to 50kph.

Surprisingly, these birds weren't related to the modern Ostrich. It's believed that their closest-living relatives are the Red-legged Seriema and the Black-legged Seriema, which are both South American species.
