We can figure out the age of a tree by counting the growth rings in its trunk. Palaeontologists use the same method to determine the age of individual dinosaurs. Unfortunately, this method doesn't work very well for many species because their bones grew continuously. Therefore, the growth rings aren't very neat. It's estimated that Sauropods such as Diplodocus and Apatosaurus had lifespans of around 70 to 80 years, which is roughly the same as modern Elephants. T-Rex reached its full adult size around the age of 20. Sue, the oldest-known T-Rex, died at the age of 28.

I thought it was more down to carbon dating. Taking a sample of the bone and testing it accordingly.

I thought it was more down to carbon dating. Taking a sample of the bone and testing it accordingly. Carbon dating is rarely applicable to fossils and can really only be used for dating fossils that are less than 60,000 years old. Therefore, it's not likely to be used for dating dinosaur fossils.
