The skeleton of an unknown predatory dinosaur was recently sold at auction to a private collector for more that $2,000,000. Palaeontologists are hoping the buyer will donate the fossil to a museum.

It disappoints me that the skeleton was sold to a private collector. It would have been much better if a museum had bought it, so then scientists could study it and the public would be able to see it.
Back in the 90s, when the largest and most complete T-Rex specimen was found in South Dakota, USA, there was a huge legal debate over who owned the skeleton, as each state has different laws regarding fossil ownership. Once the debate was settled, the fossil, nicknamed "Sue", went to auction and was sold to the Field Museum in Chicago for $8.3,000,000

I agree. All finds of this nature should go to museums for study and classification.
Any finds like this should belong to the world not hidden away in some private collection.
What's this person going to do with such a thing?

This is a very complicated subject. I think I'd like for all fossils to simply be domain of all mankind. Their historical, archeological, ecological and paleontological values are immense, and should be donated to all walks of science internationally. They'll do no one any good in private collections.
