As we know from both the book and the movie, chaos theory predicted the ultimate failure of Jurassic Park. The math involved goes way over my head, yet it's possible to simulate the effects of chaos using nearly any computer. And if the computer happens to be a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) equipped for sound effects, we can actually hear what chaos sounds like. Visit this post on the Analog Devices' Engineer Zone and scroll down until you see the mp3 sound player bar to give it a listen. Please start at a low volume -- don't blow your ears or your speakers!

Scientists believe that the Parasaurolophus' unique crest helps it vocalize. But what might it sound like? Starting with the crest's length, the speed of sound, and various assumptions, I attempted to produce the sound with a DSP chip as described above. The resulting mp3 file is attached below. The crest of Parasaurolophus may have helped with species recognition, attracting a mate and improving the sense of smell. It was also a sexual dimorphic characteristic with adult males having larger crests than females. Another theory is that the crest may have helped regulate the temperature of the brain.

Thanks for your comment, that's quite a lot of uses for the crest. I need a crest to keep my brain from burning out! And that crest gives the Parasaurolophus such an endearing appearance -- no wonder it's the second dino we see in Jurassic Park, right after the majestic Brach. This link describes how the crest aids in vocalization: www.sandia.gov/media/dinosaur.htm Did anyone play the sounds I myself created in this thread? What did you think of them?
